This report is a comprehensive and systematic assessment of the income data and their utility for policy-related analyses in eight major surveys: the Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP); the Annual Social and Economic Supplement to the Current Population Survey (CPS); the American Community Survey (ACS); the Household Component of the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS); the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS); the Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey Cost and Use files (MCBS); the Health and Retirement Study (HRS); and the Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID).

New Health Insurance Coverage Estimates and their Impact on Policy Decisions

September 10, 2009.  Today is a busy day at SHADAC because the Census Bureau released health insurance coverage estimates for calendar year 2008.  These estimates, from the Current Population Survey (CPS), show that 46.3 million people in the United States are uninsured, or 15.4 percent of the population.  This is up from 2007, although not by a statistically significant amount.

The number of uninsured Americans is large and growing over time, yet there continues to be debate about exactly how many Americans are uninsured. Researchers use data from several different national surveys to estimate the number of uninsured people in America and discrepancies in their estimates are common.  This brief compares estimates of health insurance coverage from four national health surveys sponsored by the federal government, identifies the differences in their estimates of uninsurance, and identifies  common themes.  September 2009.

Highlights from SHADAC's NHIS State-Level Health Insurance Estimates Conference Call

On July 27, 2009, the State Health Access Data Assistance Center (SHADAC) hosted a conference call featuring Robin Cohen, PhD, senior statistician in the Division of Health Interview Statistics at the National Center for Health Statistics. Dr. Cohen discussed early release findings from the 2008 National Health Interview Survey, published in the June 2009 report, "Health Insurance Coverage: Early Release of Estimates from the National Health Interview Survey, 2008," by Robin A. Cohen and Michael E.

Small Area Health Insurance Estimates Released

August 3, 2009. The U.S. Census Bureau released an update to their model-based Small Area Health Insurance Estimates (SAHIE) today. The 2006 SAHIE is a three-year average of health insurance coverage for 2005, 2006, and 2007, based on Current Population Survey Annual Social and Economic Supplement (CPS ASEC) data. This release provides state and county-level estimates of uninsurance by age, sex, and <= 200 percent of the Federal Poverty Level.

SHADAC releases two issue briefs on race, ethnicity and immigration measured in federal surveys

July 23, 2009.  SHADAC has released two issue briefs as a resource for those who are conducting surveys or using federal survey data for policy development. These briefs are intended to assist state and federal analysts with survey development and/or analysis of existing survey data to estimate health insurance coverage and access to care for disparities populations.
