Barely Hanging On

Publication Year:
2010

This report presents state-by-state trends in employer-sponsored health insurance coverage from 2000 to 2008.  This coverage has long been the mainstay of coverage in the United States, particularly for middle class families.

The report was released by The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation for the 2010 Cover the Uninsured Week, a national effort to highlight the fact that too many Americans are living without health insurance and demand solutions from our nation's leaders.

We’re Barely Hanging On to Employer Sponsored Health Insurance

March 17, 2010. A new report came out today that presents the grim toll that the two recessions of the 21st century have taken on employer-sponsored health insurance coverage.  "Barely Hanging On:  Middle Class and Uninsured" includes analysis of these trends, conducted by SHADAC researchers.  The report was released by The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and includes state-by state analysis.  It has been reported extensively through the county.

CPS Uninsurance Trends by State

Publication Year:
2010

This Excel file provides summary tables of uninsurance estimates by state, trended from calendar years 2001 through 2008.  One table provides estimates only, and a second table provides the estimates with the standard errors.

Estimates are calculated using SHADAC's enhanced Current Population Survey (CPS) adjustments, which includes several adjustments to the estimates that are not made by the Census Bureau when it reports health insurance estimates from the CPS.

Enhanced CPS Variables Now Available

March 9, 2010.  In fall of 2009 we introduced "enhanced" estimates from the Current Population Survey (CPS), providing a harmonized view of health insurance coverage over time.  These enhanced estimates are useful for policy analysis.

We developed these estimates because the data released by the Census Bureau do not account for some methodological changes that result in known consistency problems.  Research conducted by SHADAC since 2000 has proven that these and other problems impact health insurance coverage estimates.
