In this article, authors Jean Abraham, Pinara Karaca-Mandic, and Michel Boudreaux, generate national-, regional-, and state-level estimates of the individual health insurance market using multiple federal surveys and administrative data from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC).

Presentation by SHARE Deputy Director Donna Spencer on October 18, 2013, at the 27th Annual Conference of the American Evaluation Association (AEA) in Washington, D.C.  Dr. Spencer presented the results of a systematic review of the data and methods used to conduct SHARE-funded research during the course of the grant program.  She also discussed the lessons learned about the various approaches used.

The number of uninsured Americans is large and growing over time, yet there continues to be debate about exactly how many Americans are uninsured. Researchers use data from several different national surveys to estimate the number of uninsured people in America and discrepancies in their estimates are common.  This brief compares estimates of health insurance coverage from four national health surveys sponsored by the federal government, identifies the differences in their estimates of uninsurance, and identifies  common themes.  Updated September 2013.
