How the CPS Measures Health Insurance Status and the New Verification Question

2001 In March 2000, the Census Bureau added a verification question to the Current Population Survey (CPS) health insurance module. This question resulted in a more accurate estimate of the rate of uninsurance. This brief describes the Census Bureau’s previous approach to measuring health insurance and discusses the effect of introducing the verification component. August 2001.
