SHARE Webinar Available for Viewing: Tax-Based CHIP/Medicaid Outreach

The SHARE webinar "Using Income Tax Information to Target Medicaid and CHIP Outreach," is now available for viewing.

The event was broadcast on February 24th and features presentations by David Idala, Director of Medicaid Policy Studies at The Hilltop Institute (University of Maryland, Baltimore County) and Brenda Freshour-Johnston, Outreach Coordinator at the Iowa Department of Human Services.   The presenters discuss the use of state tax data in Maryland and Iowa, respectively, to more effectively target outreach and enrollment efforts for public insurance programs.  Only three states have used this strategy so far, and these are the first available findings on the implementation and impact of such initiatives.

Upcoming SHARE Webinar: Using Income Tax Information to Target Medicaid and CHIP Outreach

As the federal health reform discussion moves forward, questions about implementing coverage expansions are becoming increasingly significant.   One particularly critical question is how to identify the population that will be newly eligible for public programs, like Medicaid, in order to facilitate their enrollment.   We can find answers to this question by looking at strategies that have been tested on the ground at the state level.

We invite you to join SHARE as we host a webinar featuring David Idala, Director of Medicaid Policy Studies at The Hilltop Institute at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.  David will discuss a strategy for targeting public program outreach that has been tried in several states-namely, the use of income tax information.  Specifically, David will talk about the use of this approach to target Medicaid and CHIP outreach in the state of Maryland.  David's presentation will be followed by a discussion of Iowa's experience with this strategy in targeting outreach for its CHIP coverage.  Ample time will be provided for participants to ask questions.

The webinar will be held on February 24, from 12:00 - 1:00 P.M. EST.  The event is open to the public, but registration is required.

SHADAC Launches New Data Center

SHADAC has launched a new online tool that allows easy access to health insurance coverage estimates.

Using currently available sources of health insurance data can be time consuming and cumbersome for both policymakers and researchers. In addition, tracking these estimates over time is an outright challenge. A new web-based tool, developed by researchers at SHADAC, allows quick and easy access to health insurance coverage estimates and trends.

The SHADAC Data Center, being released today, allows users to:

  • Access U.S. Census Bureau data quickly and easily
  • Utilize coverage trend data from 1987 to present, available for the first time using SHADAC’s exclusive enhanced estimates
  • Translate data into customized tables and graphs that can be easily downloaded
  • Export data for use quickly, without the hassle of downloading new software

To introduce the new tool, experts at SHADAC will host a webinar at 1 p.m. EDT, Tuesday, November 17, to give researchers and interested stakeholders a chance to learn more about how the new Data Center can be used and how SHADAC’s enhanced data can be accessed.
